Raczynski Library

Conservation work on the Raczynski Library building in Poznan included the restoration of the front facade, stone attic, cast iron columns and stuccoed loggia of the historic Library building on the side of Liberty Square.

The work also involved dismantling the entire stone attic of the roof, then transporting it to the hall and restoring it with partial reconstruction, which was carried out by conservators and certified stucco artists. A major execution challenge proved to be the reseating and installation of the attic, as some of the elements weighed more than 500 kg. The work also included a major overhaul of the columns located on the main facade. The columns were made in cast iron, hence the choice of revitalization techniques had to be properly agreed upon by us.

In consultation with the Office of the City Historic Preservation Officer, prior to implementation we performed additional stratigraphic research to establish and define the chronology of the historical layers present. It was thanks to them that we obtained full knowledge of the original technology of construction and the original color scheme of the facade. – Radosław Piechnik, Project manager
